Snapchat Topic Chats: Snapchat introduces new public conversations

Snapchat is rolling out Snapchat Topic Chats, a feature that lets users join open discussions about popular themes and trends. For years, the platform focused almost entirely on private messages. Spotlight changed that. As more people began watching public clips, they also wanted a place to talk about them inside Snapchat. Topic Chats are built to fill that gap.

A simple way to jump into trending conversations

Snapchat Topic Chats appear across the app as a bright yellow “Join the Chat” button. Tap it, and you enter a conversation tied to a specific topic. Inside the chat, you can see what others are saying and browse related Spotlight videos.
Snapchat expects a wide range of themes. During internal tests, the company used Formula 1 and the reality series Below Deck as early examples.

How Topic Chats fit into Snapchat’s experience

Snapchat keeps its privacy-centered design, even with this new public space. Users in a Topic Chat won’t see your full profile unless they are already your friends. This rule helps prevent spam, unwanted requests or random messages.

You will also see when your friends join a Topic Chat. Any chat you enter will stay pinned at the top of your personalized Topic Chats page, making it easy to return later.

These chats will appear in several places: Chat shortcuts, the Stories page, Spotlight videos and search results. If a topic starts trending, Snapchat may surface a chat for it automatically.

Moderation and safety for Snapchat Topic Chats

Public spaces need strong moderation. Snapchat says it will monitor Topic Chats with automated systems and human review. The company told TechCrunch it plans to use LLMs along with other tools to filter unsafe themes and detect problematic behavior.

Profiles remain private unless there is an existing friendship. According to Snap, this should reduce negative interactions and keep the chat environment healthy.

Why Snapchat is launching the feature now

Spotlight changed how people use Snapchat. As more users began engaging with public videos, the company saw demand for a dedicated place to respond and share thoughts. Topic Chats bring those reactions into the app, rather than pushing people to outside platforms.

The feature also strengthens Snapchat’s position against apps where public conversation drives engagement. Now, a Spotlight clip can link directly to a chat about the same subject, making the experience more connected.

When Snapchat Topic Chats will be available

Snapchat says Topic Chats will start rolling out in the coming weeks in the US, Canada and New Zealand. A wider release is expected later. As the feature expands, users will see Topic Chats pop up naturally while browsing stories, checking Spotlight or searching for trends.

Topic Chats represent a major shift for Snapchat. The app is opening up new ways for people to participate in public conversations, while still protecting user privacy. It’s a step toward blending Snapchat’s private culture with more open, community-driven interaction.
