Qualcomm stock rocketed 11% Monday following the company’s announcement of new artificial intelligence accelerator chips designed to compete directly with Nvidia and AMD in the rapidly expanding data center market. Clearly, the dramatic stock surge reflects investor enthusiasm about Qualcomm diversifying beyond its traditional mobile chipset business into the most lucrative segment of the semiconductor industry.
Specifically, the chipmaker unveiled two products: the AI200, launching commercially in 2026, and the AI250, planned for 2027. Both chips can be configured in full liquid-cooled server rack systems, matching the deployment model that has made Nvidia’s offerings dominant in AI infrastructure.

Currently, Nvidia controls over 90% of the AI chip market, with sales driving the company to a market capitalization exceeding $4.5 trillion. In particular, Nvidia’s graphics processing units trained OpenAI’s GPT models and power most major AI deployments globally. Consequently, this dominance has made Nvidia one of the world’s most valuable companies.
However, customers increasingly seek alternatives to avoid dependency on a single supplier. For example, OpenAI recently announced plans to purchase chips from AMD, the second-place GPU manufacturer, and potentially take an equity stake. Similarly, major cloud providers including Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are developing proprietary AI accelerators for their services.
Therefore, this fragmentation creates opportunities for Qualcomm. Notably, Qualcomm’s data center chips derive from Hexagon neural processing units (NPUs) used in the company’s smartphone processors. “We first wanted to prove ourselves in other domains, and once we built our strength over there, it was pretty easy for us to go up a notch into the data center level,” explained Durga Malladi, Qualcomm’s general manager for data center and edge.
In addition, the rack-scale systems match competitors by allowing up to 72 chips functioning as a single computer, providing the massive computing power AI labs require for advanced models. Moreover, each rack consumes 160 kilowatts, comparable to high-end Nvidia GPU configurations.
Furthermore, Qualcomm claims advantages in power consumption, total cost of ownership, and memory architecture. Specifically, the AI cards support 768 gigabytes of memory, exceeding current Nvidia and AMD offerings. “What we have tried to do is make sure that our customers are in a position to either take all of it or say, ‘I’m going to mix and match,'” Malladi stated.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia-based Humain signed as Qualcomm’s first major customer, committing to deploy systems utilizing up to 200 megawatts of power starting in 2026. Clearly, this substantial commitment provides crucial validation for Qualcomm’s technology before broader commercial availability.
