The French postal DDoS attack caused major disruptions across France just days before Christmas. Central systems at La Poste went offline, affecting parcel tracking and digital services during one of the busiest delivery periods of the year.
As a result, postal workers lost access to key tools needed to process and monitor shipments. Although standard letter delivery continued, customers experienced delays and uncertainty around parcels and payments.
What happened during the French postal DDoS attack
According to Reuters, the distributed denial-of-service attack overwhelmed La Poste’s core infrastructure on December 22. The attack forced several internal systems offline at once.
Because of that, employees could not track packages in real time. In addition, online payments through La Banque Postale stopped working temporarily, adding financial disruption to logistical chaos.
By Wednesday morning, the incident had not been fully resolved. Engineers continued working to restore normal operations while managing ongoing service instability.
Pro-Russian group claims responsibility
Shortly after the incident, a pro-Russian hacker group publicly claimed responsibility for the French postal DDoS attack. The group, known as Noname057, has previously targeted government agencies and public services across Europe.
Most of its activity has focused on Ukraine and countries seen as politically aligned with Kyiv. However, attacks have also appeared in several other regions, often timed to create public disruption and media attention.
This incident fits a broader pattern of politically motivated cyberattacks aimed at civilian infrastructure rather than military targets.
Ongoing pressure from European and US authorities
European law enforcement has already taken action against the group behind the French postal DDoS attack. Europol launched a coordinated operation earlier this year targeting members and infrastructure linked to the hackers.
At the same time, United States Department of Justice has supported international efforts to disrupt the group’s operations. These actions signal growing cooperation against state-aligned cybercrime networks.
Even so, takedowns have not stopped new attacks from appearing under familiar names or rebranded identities.
Why postal services remain attractive targets
Postal systems combine logistics, payments, and national infrastructure. That mix makes them ideal targets for disruption-focused attacks. A single outage can affect commerce, public trust, and daily life at scale.
Moreover, holiday periods increase pressure. Attackers know that downtime before Christmas amplifies the impact without needing long-term access or complex exploits.
For that reason, experts expect similar attacks against transportation, utilities, and public services to continue.
