A faster and smarter way to edit photos
Meta is pushing Instagram deeper into the AI era. The company added generative editing tools directly to Stories. Now, users can type short text prompts to remove, replace, or transform objects in their photos — instantly and without extra apps.
This change puts Instagram in line with other platforms that use AI for creative work, such as ChatGPT Atlas and Mico, Microsoft’s AI assistant for Copilot.
Smarter tools for better stories
A new “Restyle” menu now appears at the top of the Stories composer. It includes options like Add, Remove, and Change. Each one lets users tweak small details inside an image. For example, you can erase a messy background, adjust an outfit, or replace an entire scene.
The integrated prompt bar adds even more freedom. You can describe what you want with simple words — for instance, “put the cat in space.” As a result, Meta’s AI will transform the picture in seconds. The process is much faster and smoother than Meta’s older Imagine generator from 2022.
In addition, the update adds preset filters that restyle a whole image with one tap. You can try watercolor, anime, or even retro 8-bit effects. At the moment, the feature works only for photos, but video support is coming soon.
AI for both images and text
Meta is also testing “Restyle” effects for text in Stories. Until now, users could only pick from a few fonts. With the new update, you can write prompts like “make it look like toy blocks.” The AI then transforms your text style instantly.
These updates move Meta AI’s creative tools from private chats directly into the public creation flow. Therefore, millions of users can now edit and design Stories faster than ever.
Meanwhile, Instagram is adding an “Add Yours” sticker that lets people share their prompts publicly. As a result, others can remix or enhance AI-generated creations with a single tap.
The bigger picture
By weaving AI into Stories, Meta is reshaping how users create on social media. The new features make editing easier and creativity more personal. In addition, they reflect the wider AI trend across major tech brands — from Google Gemini’s in-car assistant to conversational tools like ChatGPT Atlas.
For Instagram, the “Restyle” update isn’t just another filter. Instead, it marks a shift toward AI as an everyday creative partner for more than two billion people worldwide.
