“Cheap privacy” usually means the same thing: minimal compliance, vague promises, and design decisions optimized to avoid friction today rather than consequences tomorrow.

It looks efficient. It looks pragmatic. And it almost always fails.

Cheap privacy doesn’t remove cost. It postpones it — until it becomes much harder to control.

Cheap Privacy Is Deferred Responsibility

When products treat privacy as a checkbox, responsibility is deferred.

Data is collected “just in case.”
Tracking is enabled “for optimization.”
Retention is justified “for safety.”

None of these decisions feel catastrophic on their own. Together, they build systems that depend on surveillance to function. Once that dependency exists, reversing it becomes expensive — technically, legally, and culturally, especially compared to systems that accept the real trade-offs of privacy-first design from the start.

Cheap privacy works only as long as nothing goes wrong.

Data Accumulates Faster Than Risk Is Understood

But silence is not trust. It is often uncertainty, fatigue, or lack of visibility.

Trust forms when systems behave predictably and transparently over time. Cheap privacy delays that investment. Privacy that feels expensive upfront — fewer metrics, slower growth, stricter boundaries — is usually cheaper over time.

It produces systems that are easier to reason about, easier to audit, and easier to explain. It limits exposure before it compounds. It aligns incentives early, when changes are still possible.

Privacy is often framed as ethics versus business.

In practice, it is timing.
