According to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, the platform is heading toward a future where synthetic images and videos outnumber real ones. As a result, creators may soon need to prove authenticity not by polish or quality, but by showing imperfection.

In a recent post outlining his expectations for Instagram in 2026, Mosseri offered an unusually blunt assessment. The traits that once defined creators — authenticity, personal voice, and real-world presence — are now easy to replicate with AI tools. Consequently, feeds are filling up with content that looks convincing but lacks a clear human origin.
Rather than framing this shift as a crisis, Mosseri described it as inevitable. He argued that AI-generated media can be creative and valuable. However, its rapid spread forces platforms to rethink how they define and verify what is real.
Why labeling fake media is becoming harder
For years, platforms have relied on detection systems such as watermarks or automated classifiers to label AI-generated content. Yet Mosseri openly acknowledged their limitations. As AI improves, these systems struggle to keep up. Detection becomes less reliable, easier to bypass, and more prone to false confidence.
Because of this, Mosseri believes platforms will lose the arms race against increasingly realistic AI media. Therefore, he suggests a fundamental shift in strategy.
Fingerprinting real media instead of chasing fakes
Instead of focusing on identifying what is fake, Mosseri argues that platforms should verify what is real. In his view, it will soon be more practical to cryptographically fingerprint authentic media at the moment it is captured.
This approach would require camera manufacturers — including smartphone makers — to sign images and videos at capture. That signature would then follow the media through edits and uploads, creating a chain of custody that platforms could trust.
Although Mosseri offered few technical details, the idea reflects a growing industry belief: proving authenticity may scale better than detecting deception.
What Instagram AI content means for creators
While the strategy may sound pragmatic for platforms, it raises difficult questions for creators. Many photographers and artists already feel alienated by Instagram’s algorithm, which often prioritizes trends over craft. Adding another layer of verification could deepen that frustration.
At the same time, Mosseri suggested creators rethink aesthetics altogether. According to him, the era of carefully polished square images is effectively over. Instead, raw, imperfect, and even unflattering content may become the strongest signal of authenticity in an AI-saturated feed.
In other words, looking “too good” could soon work against you.
The shift toward imperfection as proof
Mosseri argued that camera companies and creators alike may be chasing the wrong aesthetic. By making everyone look like a professional photographer, technology removes the visual cues that once signaled reality.
In contrast, imperfect lighting, awkward angles, and unscripted moments are harder for AI to fake convincingly at scale. As a result, these traits may become valuable markers of real human presence.
This represents a sharp cultural shift. For years, social media rewarded polish. Now, imperfection may carry more credibility than perfection.
Why Instagram AI content changes the platform’s role
Perhaps the most revealing part of Mosseri’s comments is what they imply about responsibility. By advocating for fingerprinting at capture, Instagram effectively shifts part of the authenticity burden away from platforms and toward device makers and creators.
That stance suggests Meta sees AI saturation as unavoidable. Instead of preventing it, the company appears focused on adapting to it with minimal friction to growth.
Whether creators and users accept that trade-off remains an open question.
